Shedding and Molting

I've read rabbits will shed every 3 months. That's alot of fur I will say.  If you can, you should brush or comb your rabbit during the molting season daily.  You don't want your bun to lick themselves while grooming and ingest alot of fur. Their digestive system has a hard time passing fur.  So brushing or alot of petting can knock off the fur so that they can't ingest it.

Experts say to brush daily when in shedding season or just weekly when not shedding. If your bun does not tolerate brushing (which none of mine do) you can try and wipe them down with a damp cloth to try and get some of the loose fur off them.  I just pet my rabbits alot each day and that will knock the fur off. You can see a pile of fur where they were laying with an outline of where they body was. That is how I know my little sweet one is shedding.

Rabbits might look funny too when shedding.  Baby sorta sheds from one section to another and you can see a definite line or where new fur meets old fur.  Gracie and Dino just have fur flying in the air behind them as they hop around the house everywhere.

If you are wondering what the little tufts of fur sticking out are on their little bunny bodies --it's just small clumps of fur that got loose but haven't come all the way out of their fur coat yet. You can manicure your bun and remove those little tufts if they are driving you nuts or if you are having company.

It's important to make sure they have alot of hay while shedding. The hay will help with the digestion of any fur.  If your bun does not usually eat alot of hay, then try to give them their veggie greens wet with water on it so that they can take extra water in.  Don't worry bunny parents, shedding season doesn't last for ever, this too will pass.
